このたび、イラストレーター勝倉大和の個展「字遊落語絵図ー文字絵でひらく落語の世界」を祖師ヶ谷大蔵の本屋 BOOKSHOP TRAVELLERで開催します。勝倉がメインヴィジュアルを担当した、同店で開催中の「立川寸志の落語夜学会ーことばでひらく落語の世界」とのコラボレーション展です。

そう、ここは字遊な世界
立体的な「文字」を舞台に、その文字から着想する物や人、動物や植物など、さまざまな要素をちりばめ遊ばせた、勝倉の代表シリーズ「文字絵」。謎かけのような仕組みもふんだんに盛り込まれた「文字絵」は、まさに、字で遊び、字を遊ばせて、ちょっぴり奇妙で字遊な世界に観る者を誘うのです。
「立川寸志の落語夜学会」を通じて、落語のおもしろさに気づいたという勝倉。落語にでてくる「ことば」のおもしろさや、登場人物のキャラクター、落語家が話すリズム…など、落語を構成する要素は、勝倉のさまざまな要素が小気味よくも複雑に絡み合う作品と呼応するでしょう。
今回は、勝倉大和と落語夜学会がコラボレーションし、勝倉と立川寸志が共同でセレクトした落語十席を「文字絵」に仕立てあげました。すべて本展のための描きおろし、新作です。
個展会期中に開催する「落語夜学会 第3回：江戸の『ちゃきちゃき』」で、立川寸志が披露する落語も「文字絵」の世界に連れ込まれたようです。
さあ、十席の落語はどのように文字絵に化けたのか。
絵の中で字遊に躍動する落語に出会えるはずです。
落語好きな方は、この文字絵はなんの演目かしらと、謎解きも楽しんでいただくもよし。
落語がはじめての方もご安心ください。演目の解説を添えるので、どんな落語なのか逆謎解きをお楽しみください。生の落語が聴きたくなったら、落語夜学会でお待ちしていますね。

アーティストステイトメント
私は「落語」に対して、なんとなく難しそうなイメージを抱いていて、これまで未知の世界でした。
しかし、「落語夜学会」をきっかけに、さまざまな落語をじっくり聴くようになり、そのおもしろさに気づきました！
落語家さんが繰り広げる物語を聴き逃さないよう、集中して耳を傾けました。表情、話のリズム、仕草、そして特に言葉の選び方が落語家さんごとに異なり、「おお！ ここでこんな表現を使うのか！」と驚かされる瞬間がたくさんあります。
物語の最後に訪れるオチが見事に決まると、なんとも言えない爽快感があり、とても心地よい体験です。
そんな落語を一枚の絵で表現するのは、非常に難しい挑戦でした。物語に登場するモチーフや場面を箇条書きにして整理し、それらをメインとなる立体文字で作ったステージ上に配置していくわけですが、物語の意図に合っているか、角度や空間がしっくりくるか、見る人が心地よく感じるかなど、試行錯誤しながら配置して描いていきました。おそらく、落語を知らない人がこれらの絵を見ると「なんだこれ？」と思うかもしれません。
でも、この機会にぜひ落語を見て、聴いて、その魅力に触れていただければ、絵に込められたおもしろさや意図に気づける部分が増えるのではないかと思います！

立川寸志さんからのメッセージ
「行間を読む」という言葉があるけれど、勝倉さんはさらにミクロに文字の構造を読み込んでいる。演目の文字の間にその演目の世界が構築された、反転した迷路のような世界。じっと見つめていると噺のあの場面やこの台詞が同時多発的に頭の中に浮かんできて、一瞬で一席聞き終えたような恍惚を味わえます。どうぞ皆さん、その幸福な一瞬に浸ってみてください。

アクリル絵の具やiPadを使い、建物、動物、食べ物、植物…など、さまざまなものを融合させた不思議でユニークな空間を描く。子どもの頃、「字は汚いけど絵は上手いね」と言われたことがきっかけで、字の汚さをコンプレックスに感じつつも、「絵で世界で一番面白い字を描いてやろう！」と決意し、独自のスタイルを追求。大きなものを小さく、小さなものを大きく描くなど、見る人を驚かせる世界観を大切にしている。

「立川寸志の落語夜学会」メインヴィジュアル
「落語夜学会」のためにイラストレーターの勝倉大和さんに絵を描きおろしていただきました。
落語の『語』という文字を立体的にした舞台の一画目に落語夜学会のメインとなる立川寸志様に座って頂けたこのビジュアルが企画にマッチしていて描いていてとても気持ちが良かったです。
そして『語』の舞台に散りばめた様々なアイテム、企画の主要3名、寸志様、和氣様、中村様に関わる、それぞれの「好き」な物達にもこの世界を飾って頂きました。「好き」に囲まれた空間をどうぞお楽しみくださいませ。

BOOKSHOP TRAVELLERとは独立書店を応援する活動BOOKSHOP LOVER主宰の和氣正幸が営む「本屋のアンテナショップ」です。

“Rakugo→Characters→Illustlations”
Illustrator Hiroto Katsukura will hold a solo exhibition entitled “Rakugo→Characters→Illustlation” at the bookshop BOOKSHOP TRAVELLER in Soshigaya-Okura. This is a collaborative exhibition with “Tatekawa Sunshi’s Rakugo Night : The World of Rakugo Opened with Words” currently being held at the same store, for which Katsukura drew the main visuals.

— The World of Playing with Characters
Katsukura uses three-dimensional “letters” as the stage for his “character pictures,” in which various elements such as objects, people, animals, and plants inspired by the letters are sprinkled and played with. Katsukura’s works are not explanatory in any way, but have an interesting riddle-like quality to them. Katsukura plays with characters and lets them play, inviting the viewer into a slightly strange world of character play.
Katsukura says he discovered the fun of Rakugo through “Tatekawa Sunshi’s Rakugo Night”. The elements that make up Rakugo, such as the interesting “words” in Rakugo, the characters, and the rhythm of the Rakugo artist’s speech, correspond to Katsukura’s work, in which various elements intertwine in a lively and complex way.
This exhibition is a collaboration between Yamato Katsikura and the Rakugo Night . Katsukura and Tatekawa Sunshi have jointly selected 10 Rakugo stories and made them into “character pictures”. All of the works are new and newly drawn for this exhibition.
Katsukura also drew a Rakugo story that will be performed by Sunshi Tatekawa in the next “Rakugo Night vol.03” .
Now, how did the Rakugo of 10 stories transform into character pictures?
Rakugo geeks can enjoy solving the riddle of what stories these character pictures are for.
If you are new to Rakugo, don’t worry. Explanation of the stories will be provided, so please enjoy solving the reverse-riddle of what stories they are. If you want to listen to live Rakugo, we are waiting for you at the Rakugo Night.

Welcome to The World of Playing with Characters.
Artist’s Statement
I organized motifs and scenes from those Rakugo stories into bullet points.
And I placed some characters that I considered to be the key words into 3 dimensional space.
I placed and painted them through trial-and-error to see if they fit the intent of the story, if the angles and space fit in nicely, and if the viewer would feel comfortable with them.
Perhaps, if someone unfamiliar with Rakugo were to look at these works, they might think, “What is this?” but I hope they will take this good opportunity to listen to Rakugo.
However, if you take this good opportunity to see and listen to Rakugo, I believe you will be able to appreciate the interest and intent behind my works in more ways!
Message from Sunshi Tatekawa
In Japanese, there is a phrase “reading between the lines,” but Katsukura reads the structure of the text even more microscopically.
The world of Rakugo stories is constructed between the words from those stories, like an inverted labyrinth.
As you stare at his works, scenes and lines from the story come to mind simultaneously, and you feel ecstatic as if you have just finished listening to one Rakugo performance in an instant. Please enjoy the moment of happiness.

Graduated from Sokei Academy of Fine Art & design, Illustration Department in 2008

Using acrylic paint and an iPad, he draws mysterious and unique spaces that fuse various objects such as buildings, animals, food, plants, and so on. When he was a child, he was told, “Your handwriting is dirty but your drawings are good.” Although he felt complex about his dirty handwriting, he decided, “I will draw the most interesting handwriting in the world with my drawings! and pursued his own unique style. He values a view of the world that surprises the viewer by drawing large objects small and small objects large.
